About 3A 18-03
Formed by the US food and dairy industry, 3A Sanitary Standards Inc. defines specifications and best practice for the design, manufacture, installation, and use of hygienic equipment. As with the FDA, the 3A standards are adopted on a worldwide basis.
3A Standard 18-03 “3A Sanitary Standards for multiple-use rubber and rubber-like materials used as product contact surfaces in dairy equipment” covers requirements for food quality materials that must also be suitable for cleaning and sanitising solutions.

3A Sanitary Seals from PPE
All PPE’s 3A Sanitary Standards approved elastomers are FDA-compliant to FDA CFR21.177.2600, free from animal derived ingredients (ADI-free), resistant to steam sterilization, milk fat and water, acid and alkali cleaning solutions and chlorine sanitizing solution.
Equipment manufacturers/users can select the most appropriate elastomer material based on temperature, chemical and physical performance requirements, PPE elastomers meeting the 3A 18-03 standard include:
- Class I: Silicon, FKM, and FFKM
- Class II: NBR and EPDM
