API 6A & ISO10423 Elastomers

API 6A & ISO10423 elastomers seals designed and manufactured to meet the challenges of upstream exploration and production applications.

The current API 6A specification is a modified adoption of the English version of ISO 10423:2003. ISO 10423 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 67, Materials, equipment and offshore structures for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries, SC 4, Drilling and production equipment which was based on the prior API Specification 6A, 17th Edition.

API (American Petroleum Institute) is a trade association that represents all aspects of America’s oil and natural gas industry.  The API maintains more than 500 standards and recommended operating practices.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies. International Standards are prepared by ISO technical committees that focus on and represent a particular area of specialty. 

Appendix F immersion procedure provides a standardized method to evaluate polymer compounds for service in liquids and gases representative of the intended application environment. The test parameters that can be selected are the composition of the gas/liquid phase and the test temperature. While the test media is determined by the appropriate API 6A Material Class, the temperature used corresponds to the API 6A Temperature Class.

API 6A / ISO 10423 Appendix F.1.13.5.2 sour fluid: Petroleum and natural gas industries – Drilling and production equipment – Wellhead and Christmas tree equipment immersion testing – standard test fluids for non-metallic seals:

  • Material class DD/EE – Gas phase mixture: 10% H2S + 5% CO2 + 85% CH4 
  • Material class FF/HH – Gas phase mixture: 10% H2S + 80% CO2 + 10% CH4
