Life science development project kept on track by PPE seals

Application

A leading OEM based in Japan developing a high pressure liquid transportation system for the medical and life sciences industry.

Problem

The systems were already manufactured, so design alterations were not possible, combined with an operating pressure which could reach 250 MPa (36,000 psi), a shaft stroke of 102mm at low velocity and a large diameteral clearance gap of 6mm, the application involved challenging sealing parameters. Tests conducted by the OEM using standard USP class VI approved seals had proved unsuccessful.

Solution

Three conceptual designs were provided. The OEM placed a sample order for all three designs to save development time. PPE supplied the USP Class VI approved PTFE/EPDM engineered solutions which were tested for leaks, noise and flow rates at system pressure.

Outcome

All three designs performed well and were deemed acceptable by the OEM ensuring their development project could continue on schedule.
